Hume's Tawny Owls and Sooty Falcons

On the 20th and 21st of July, we had two perfect birding days in the desert, west of Be'er Ora.

On the 20th, a new location for a Hume's Tawny Owl (Strix butleri) was found, bringing it to five different pairs in the Eilat mountains. The owl was calling from a high cliff above a canyon. One fledging was also heard from a far distance. A distant Sooty Falcon (Falco concolor) was flying high above.

On the 21st, Zohar and Noam Weiss were checking Wadi Gadna for raptor nestings. An adult Egptian Vulture (Neophorn percnopterus) took off from the southern cliff, but no nest was found. Suddenly, they heard two Sooty Falcons calling from the other side, where they seen flying above and perched on a high cliff to mate.
