The Green Backed Heron was a rare bird in Eilat, seen mostly after its breeding season down south in Sinai. Since the erection of the fish cages in the bay (Dag Suf and Ardag), they became numerous and started breeding on the cages. The Herons usually chose some nets packs that had to be moved by the farmers, and open platforms, also risking the broods. It was three years ago, that Dag Suf initiated with the cooperation of the IBRCE, a nesting box which is really just an empty blue plastic barrel, standing above water, protecting the nest from waves and human activity. Well… they liked it and each year now we have a t least 3 active nests on the cages. Most of the fledglings get our rings, again with the technical and surveillance help of the Dag Suf crew (Thank you Chen, Yael and Odi). It is a mystery what will happen to the Green Backed Herons of Eilat when these cages will be evacuated next summer. |
