The Flamingos attempting to nest (again) in the salt ponds

Last week, the visiting bird photographer Ronny Livne spotted the Flamingos in the northern salt ponds of Eilat, building nests in the water. The Flamingos were collecting the black mud with their bills building a small volcano shaped bumps forming a small colony.

We assume that the birds in question are second year birds, only starting to feel the urge of nest building, as late August is not the right time of year for them to make nests (Flamingo nests in Turkey between April and July).

The Flamingos of Eilat originate from both Turkey and Iran. With some luck you can spot the Turkish bright white plastic ring on their leg. Most of them only spend the winter in Eilat. Almost all the birds which are seen during summer are first and second year Flamingos that are not sexually mature yet. In the past we had attempts of nest building and even laying eggs. We hope that in the future also some adults will stay for the summer and form a new colony of breeding Flamingos down in Eilat. We feel that these days are closer than ever.
