Birding report, February


On the 09/02, a dark 2YC Oriental Honey Buzzard was found above the
Bird Sanctuary in Eilat and stayed all month. This is the first winter record for the country.
On the 24/02 an additional Olive -backed Pipit joined the 2
wintering in Eilot's date grove.
Eilot's southern fields are now holding a Buff - bellied Pipit, a
Richard's Pipit, and lots of common migrants like Black - eared ,
Isabelline
and Desert Wheatears.
The Hoopoe Larks seems to be doing well at samar and Elifaz sand
dunes, with males in each.
On the 25/02 a Sociable Lapwing in full breeding plumage at Yotvata
circular field. The Pharaoh Eagle Owl is there too.
At the ringing station up to a 150 birds caught daily with lots of
migrants (mainly Chiffchaffs, Lesser and Greater Whitethroats, House
Martin
s, first Rueppel's and Cyprus Warblers etc....)
On the night of the 25/02, with 4 Italian birders, we saw an Owl,
showing characters of a Pearl - breasted Owlet. Identification not
confirmed yet. This Owl was not found the later days and nights.

Striated scops Owls, Desert Warblers and Sinai Rosefinches can still be seen in their usual spots.

The Hume's Tawny Owls are waking up for the beginning of their breeding season becoming very vocal most nights.
